Most POD calculators forget marketplace fees, so they overstate your margin by 10 to 15 points. This one includes provider base cost, shipping, subscription amortization, and Etsy, Shopify, or Amazon fees.

โ„น๏ธ Base costs are 2026 published figures and vary by print provider, product color, and size. Sizes 2XL and up typically add $2 to $6. Always confirm live pricing in your provider dashboard before setting retail prices.

How POD Profit Is Actually Calculated

The reason so many print-on-demand sellers are surprised by their payout is that the obvious math leaves out the marketplace. Base cost subtracted from retail price looks like a healthy margin. Then Etsy takes a listing fee, a transaction fee calculated on the item price plus the shipping you charged, and a payment processing cut. What looked like 45% becomes 28%.

The complete formula has four cost categories:

Cost CategoryWhat It IncludesTypical Size
Base product costThe provider's charge for the blank plus printing$3.68 โ€“ $13.50
Shipping you payProvider's fulfillment shipping, first item$3.99 โ€“ $5.99
Marketplace feesListing, transaction, and payment processing9.5% โ€“ 12% + fixed
Subscription amortizedMonthly plan cost divided by monthly orders$0 โ€“ $2.50 per order

Etsy Fee Structure for POD Sellers (2026)

Etsy is where most POD sellers start, and its fee stack is the one that most often breaks a margin assumption. Four separate charges apply to a single sale:

The Offsite Ads trap: On a $24.99 shirt with roughly $7 of margin, a 12% Offsite Ads charge on the order total takes about $3.00 โ€” nearly half your profit on that sale. Offsite Ads only fire on attributed sales, not every order, so the practical effect is a reduction in average margin rather than a flat cost. Sellers approaching the $10,000 threshold should reprice before it becomes mandatory.

Subscription Break-Even Math

Both major platforms sell a subscription that discounts base costs. Whether it pays depends entirely on your monthly order volume, and the break-even is lower than most sellers assume.

๐Ÿ’œ

Printify Premium

$29/month month-to-month, or about $24.99/month billed annually. Delivers roughly a 20% discount on base product costs and raises the store limit from 5 to 10. On a Bella + Canvas tee, the discount saves roughly $2.26 per unit, so break-even lands near 13 orders per month.

๐ŸŸข

Printful Growth

$24.99/month, offering up to 33% off products, 9% off branding fees such as inside labels, and 25% off sample orders. It becomes free for the following year once your store reaches $12,000 in annual sales. Break-even is roughly 10 orders per month on apparel.

โš–๏ธ

When to Stay Free

Below about 10 orders per month, both subscriptions cost more than they save. New stores should validate designs on the free tier first. The exception is a seller launching with paid advertising and expecting immediate volume, where the discount applies from order one.

Hidden Costs That Erode POD Margins

CostAmountWhen It Applies
Additional print placement$2.49 โ€“ $5.25Back, sleeve, or pocket prints beyond the first
Inside label printing$0.99Branded neck labels (Printful)
Embroidery digitization$2.95 โ€“ $6.50One-time per embroidered design
Each additional item shipped~$2.00Multi-item orders, per extra unit
Plus sizes (2XL and up)+$2.00 โ€“ $6.00Larger apparel sizes
Seasonal shipping surcharge~$0.40Peak holiday windows
Minnesota Retail Delivery Fee$0.50Orders over $100 shipped to Minnesota
Sample ordersFull cost, discountedQuality checks before launch

Sellers offering a back print and a branded inside label on a shirt can add $3.50 to $6.00 per unit to base cost. On a $24.99 retail price, that is the difference between a workable margin and a loss once Offsite Ads fire.

Worked Example โ€” Etsy T-Shirt at $24.99

A Bella + Canvas 3001 tee sold on Etsy at $24.99 with free shipping to the customer, fulfilled through Printify with a Premium subscription, 30 orders per month:

Line ItemAmount
Retail price collected$24.99
Base product costโˆ’$9.04
Shipping you payโˆ’$4.69
Etsy listing feeโˆ’$0.20
Etsy transaction fee (6.5%)โˆ’$1.62
Payment processing (3% + $0.25)โˆ’$1.00
Printify Premium amortized (30 orders)โˆ’$0.83
Profit per sale$7.61
Margin30.5%

Now apply Offsite Ads at 12% on the $24.99 order total, which costs $3.00. Profit drops to $4.61 and margin to 18.4%. That single variable is the difference between a business that can afford to advertise and one that cannot. If a meaningful share of your sales come through Offsite Ads, price with that assumption built in rather than treating it as an occasional surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” POD Profit

How do you calculate print-on-demand profit?
Take your retail price plus any shipping you charge, then subtract four things: the provider's base product cost, the shipping you pay the provider, marketplace fees, and your monthly subscription divided by monthly orders. On Etsy in 2026 the marketplace fees are $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction on item price plus shipping charged, and 3% + $0.25 processing in the US. A $24.99 tee at $9.04 base cost and $4.69 shipping nets roughly $7.61, a 30.5% margin, before Offsite Ads.
Is Printify or Printful cheaper in 2026?
Printify is cheaper on base costs. A Bella + Canvas 3001 tee runs about $9.04 on Printify Premium versus $11.69 at Printful, roughly 22.7% lower. Mugs show a much wider gap: about $3.68 versus $7.56, a 51% difference. Printful's higher pricing buys in-house fulfillment and tighter quality consistency, while Printify routes through 80+ independent providers whose output varies between orders.
Is Printify Premium or Printful Growth worth it?
Printify Premium is $29/month monthly or about $24.99/month annually for roughly 20% off base costs, breaking even near 13 orders per month. Printful Growth is $24.99/month for up to 33% off products plus 9% off branding and 25% off samples, and it becomes free for a year once you hit $12,000 in annual sales, breaking even near 10 orders per month. Below about 10 orders monthly, stay on the free tier.
What is a good profit margin for print on demand?
Target 25% to 40% after all costs including marketplace fees. Below 20% you have no room for advertising, returns, or a fee increase. Reaching 40% usually requires a markup of at least 2.5x base cost, a subscription discount, or shifting toward higher-margin products like mugs and posters instead of apparel. Build Offsite Ads into your pricing if any meaningful share of sales come through them.
Why is my Etsy POD payout lower than expected?
Usually one of three reasons. First, the 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping you charge, not just the item price. Second, Offsite Ads at 12% to 15% fired on that order. Third, the item was a plus size or had an extra print placement, adding $2 to $6 of base cost you did not price for. Check the order detail in your provider dashboard against the Etsy payment account entry to identify which.
Did Printify and Printful merge?
They announced a merger in late 2025, but as of mid-2026 they still operate independently with separate catalogs, pricing, subscriptions, and accounts. Continue pricing against each platform's current published rates until operational consolidation is announced.
Which POD products have the best margins?
Mugs, posters, and stickers typically carry the strongest margins because base costs are low relative to what customers will pay. An 11oz mug at a $3.68 base cost sold at $16.99 leaves far more room than a tee at $9.04 sold at $24.99, even though the shirt has a higher absolute price. Apparel is the most competitive category and therefore the most price-compressed.
